This was our 2nd stay of a week at An Cos, our first being just over a year earlier. We have been coming up to the Applecross and Torridon area in the Autumn for many years and An Cos is by far the best accommodation we have ever experienced. As previous guests have commented, it is beautifully designed and fitted with oak throughout. The beds are huge, the bathrooms (2 en-suite) are spacious, with fluffy towels and Annan toiletries and the steam room downstairs is a real treat. The kitchen has everything you need, including a well stocked larder with condiments etc. The location is absolutely stunning. Quite understandably, dogs are not allowed – a good or a bad thing depending on your perspective!

An Cos is a beautiful home to stay with a tasteful flair for interior design and every creature comfort and practicality catered for with great attention to detail. The location is stunning with extensive views over Shieldaig, the island, loch and mountains beyond, views which change every day with the tides, light and weather, a quiet and peaceful spot yet with easy access within a 5 minute walk to the excellent Coastal Bar and Kitchen, Stovies, a small yet well equipped shop, the local smokehouse. The Shieldaig headland walk is a marvellous leg stretch right from the doorstep. Wester Ross itself is a marvellous area to explore and our two weeks at An Cos couldn’t possibly do it justice. The kitchen is beautiful with high quality fittings and well equipped so that self catering is really easy, similar the bathrooms (including drench showers), bedrooms, lounge, dining room all very comfortable, a practical boot room and separate utility room. Everything was spotlessly clean and maintained to a high standard with excellent information provided. We look forward to returning.

This was our first escape since the start of Covid and a first trip to Scotland for my wife and children. It was a great holiday with many memorable moments. Perhaps the best of the weather was seen by guests in July, but we felt ourselves lucky to see rapid changes throughout every day. The views changed and suggested new opportunities to explore – a high pass to Applecross with spectacular views, walking to Torridon, great seafood at Kishorn, and even a day chasing the sun on Skye, with walks, magic glens, visit to Talisker distillery and the sight of the Cuillins as the sun set. Perhaps best of all was a gentle stroll down to Shieldaig and looking for crabs in the loch, and an even slower amble back up to An Cos. At the start and end of each day was the lovely welcoming An Cos, where every creature comfort beckoned. It was a splendid holiday, enjoyed by all…and we didn’t have to go half way around the world to get there.

We have had another wonderful holiday in An Cos, Shieldaig. Because of Covid restrictions not all of us could be accommodated in An Cos itself but the remainder were housed nearby and the weather was so good throughout the week that we were able to have all our meals together out of doors.   An Cos is a delightful house and occupies a splendid position above the village, with lovely views across the loch. It is a very superior dwelling and is beautifully appointed. With regard to the practicalities, the fittings and equipment are modern and of the highest quality but at the same time there are many traditional features with some lovely pieces of furniture.   All together it is an incomparable place for a family holiday and the perfect house to stay in.

We experienced a wonderful week at An Cos where every measure possible had been taken to ensure the house was Covid-19 safety compliant. A truly lovely house with amazing views of Loch Shieldaig and it’s Island where the two sea eagles were seen daily, circling their habitat. There is so much to do and see in the area, from walking locally to an array of more challenging walks in the Torridon mountains. We enjoyed kayaking, a wild life boat trip and challenging cycling routes around the Applecross peninsula. Returning to the comforts of An Cos each evening was delightful and we all enjoyed cooking in the incredibly well equipped kitchen and then dining whilst enjoying the views and sunsets. All businesses that were open in Wester Ross proved to be very welcoming whilst also ensuring safety measures were respected. We are so very pleased we chose a stress free fabulous holiday in An Cos this summer over a holiday in Europe with all the inevitable unpredictability of travel arrangements. We will certainly return.

The weekend had everything that the Torridons could throw at us in terms of weather; yet the walking and scrambling in the area was magnificent, the best part was returning to our the beautiful accommodation each night with a warm fire, good wine and luxuroious surroundings. An Cos is a wonderful place, enough space for 9-10 of us and plenty room to breath. We have already booked next year…

Having read the latest reviews, what more can I add? All the superlatives have been used up, and rightly so. We too, have enjoyed the joys and wonders of the wildlife and of the spirit lifting scenery in which An Cos sits. Who needs a yoga retreat when you can wonder through calming woodland and hug an ancient tree or two? The weather last week was utterly amazing, not just because it was sunny, enhancing the beauty of the autumn colours, and mild, (swimming!) and fabulous sunsets, but because the forecast had been torrentially terrible. So: never believe the forecasts! This glorious part of the highlands has very special memories for us and An Cos is THE perfect house to facilitate your own adventures. Don’t change a thing.

In 20 years of holidays on the Scottish West coast this is the best place we have found. We have just booked for 2 weeks next year, I think that says it all.

My family and I enjoyed a week-long stay at An Cos – our first 3-generation family holiday – and what a wonderful place for it! An Cos is a beautifully furnished and equipped house in a stunning location and kept spotlessly clean by Fiona the lovely housekeeper. Shieldaig has much to offer for such a small village – delicious seafood meals at the Coastal Kitchen; lovely breakfasts and light lunches at Nanny’s; it’s own smokery; a well stocked village shop; Mya’s authentic Thai curries from the village hall and superb bread, pasties, quiches and preserves from Peter of Little Swallow Foods – his artist wife Lisa’s studio (‘Blue Roof Studio’) is also well worth a visit. The 1.75 mile walk along the peninsula via the well-made track running along the back of the house is another great local feature, with fantastic views on both sides across Loch Shieldaig and across Loch Torridon to the Torridon mountains – we did it 3 times during the week and enjoyed a family picnic on one of the well placed benches. As a wildlife…
